Dancing, Dead Sea Gulls, Nights, Baby Food and Pancakes

What do dancing, dead sea gulls, knights, baby food and pancakes have in common? According to Bill Kenney, from Test My Pitch, who presented at Workbench this April, they are essential elements for a successful pitch.
As you may have guessed, he was speaking metaphorically. Dancing describes the preparedness needed so when you get before the individual(s) you’ll be delivering your pitch to, you can gracefully lead your partners taking in their needs and responses as opposed to be distracted and self-absorbed while you set up the slides, get the audio-visual to work, etc.

The dead sea gull, well . . . I’ll bet that one jumped out at you and you’re still visualizing a dead bird and wondering how you’re going to use this to pitch your plan for a more efficient data collection system to a group of harried CEOs. And that’s exactly how it works: give them a strong graphic representation – one that identifies the problem from your prospect’s perspective – and demonstrates the situation as it exists without your solution. A graphic that stays with them .
By now you’ve probably caught on that you (or your company/product) is the knight. Take that graphic and show how, like St. George, you’re going to slay that dragon (or , to stick with seagulls, clean the oil off the seagull’s feathers and bring it back to life).
Now the baby food. Well, once you and your prospect are happily moving in harmony, and you’ve reviewed the horrors of their current situation and introduced an efficient solution, take the time to present it all in nice, digestible bits. Simple thoughts; short sentences. The measure of a good pitch is if someone can repeat it someone to else.

And the pancakes? Well, in a way, the entire pitch is the pancake. Pitches are like pancakes in that often the first one is the worst of the batch. “You have to pitch badly to pitch well,” Kenney said. It takes time to learn to and hone the combination of skills required for a good pitch, and often the feedback on how a pitch can be improved, or where it went wrong, isn’t given till it’s too late. The Monday Man: EN.SUE

Success. Do we even know what it means? I do not ask this in a philosophical manner, as to discuss our own individual interpretations of the concept, but rather in a linguistic manner: do we actually know what the word means?

In the year 2014, success seems to be synonymous with tangible representations of wealth, popularity or notoriety among the masses, or an accomplishment of a goal. However, I would argue that the word success has nothing to do with the former, and I have the evidence to prove my case. The Latin etymology of the word succeed is “succedere” which simply means to come after or to follow after. This stays consistent with the Late 14th Century Old French etymology of “succeder” which means to follow on. The Latin etymology of success is quite similar: “successus” meaning a result or an outcome.

So as you can see, we are quite off the mark. Success is not the achievement or attainment of an individual or collective goal. Success simply means that there is a next step. It doesn’t really matter what it is, per say, but simply that there is a next step. A result, an outcome, a follow-up, an ensuing event.

With that in mind, what will EN.SUE in the coming weeks for the Grove? After a raucous month of RE and a growth of many new initiatives and projects, how do we ensure success in the future?

It is easy: one step at a time.

Why Not Us?

Why not us?

That is the question that every awesome group of individuals, organization, team, or company asks themselves at some point in time.

Why not us?

They begin to realize that it is entirely up to them to be the best, to create something truly amazing and incredible, and to leave their mark on history and the world. It can be far too easy to make excuses for yourself and to not believe that every single one of us is capable of unimaginable and unnameable success. I ask you to think of the pioneers and leaders throughout the history of the world – they all knew that there was no reason that they couldn’t do something that had never been done before. They simply asked themselves: Why not us?

And here at The Grove, I am posing this exact same question to the staff, the members, and everyone who is a part of the community. Why couldn’t The Grove become a place that is recognized internationally for its contributions to the world? Why couldn’t The Grove become a hub of social, humanitarian, political, economical, artistic, educational, professional, and cultural wealth? Why couldn’t The Grove become the leaders of the next generation and create a lasting impact on human history?

To me, I see no reason that this is not a possibility. In fact, I believe that this is the course we are on and the direction we are headed in – as we are the masters of our own destiny and our future is in our own hands!
